for Radiation Protection (BfS), Salzgitter, Germany

After obtaining his diploma and PhD in mathematical physics at the Technical University of Clausthal, Heinz Peter Berg worked at the Technical Support Organization TÜV Baden on probabilistic safety assessment for nuclear power plants and at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt Braunschweig on the safety assessment of final radioactive waste disposal facilities. He joined the Department of Nuclear Safety at the BfS in 1990.

Major fields are

  • Deterministic and probabilistic safety assessment methods,

  • Assessment of internal and external hazards,

  • Comprehensive and integrated safety reviews of nuclear power plants,

  • Reliability and safety methods such as HAZOP, FMEA, FTA, ETA.

Since 1993 he is head of the German Task Force on probabilistic safety assessment for nuclear power plants. On international level he is member of several OECD/CSNI project review groups and is working with the International Atomic Energy Agency in the fields of periodic safety review and probabilistic safety assessment including participation at IAEA missions. He is working in the international standardization organization IEC and the corresponding German DKE committee in the field of dependability. He is member of the Society for Risk Analysis (USA) and the Polish Safety and Reliability Association.
